Our guest speaker tonight asked that very question.

Mary Ellen introduced Dr. Ivan Lim of GROW MEDICAL.

Dr. Lim presented of “Matters of the Heart” and encouraged us to know the warning signs of a heart attack. Chest pain, pressure or squeezing of the chest, pain in the neck or the left shoulder, nausea and/or shortness of breath are all signs to watch for.

Heart attacks can occur out of the blue, but some risk factors are high blood pressure, overweight, high cholesterol, Diabetes, smoking and lack of physical activity.

What generally happens is that atherosclerosis and/ or blood clots form and block the artery which prevents oxygen from reaching the heart muscles, causing heart damage or heart attack. The blockage is most commonly opened by use of a stent, although sometimes more serious surgery is required.

Genetics can play a role, but family lifestyle is more commonly the principal factor.
Dr. Lim urged us to get a regular a check-up and closed with “You have the power to stop a heart attack”.
